Non-monotonicity in probabilistic reasoning

چکیده

We start by defining an approach to non-monotonic prob abilistic reasoning in terms of non-monotonic categorical reasoning. We identify a type of non-monotonic proba bilistic reasoning, akin to default inheritance, that seems to be commonly found in practice. We formulate this in terms of the Maximization of Conditional Independence (MCI), and identify a variety of applications for this sort of default. We propose a formalization using Point wise Circumscription. We compare MCI to Maximum Entropy, another kind of non-monotonic principle , and conclude by raising a. number of open questions.

Nonmonotonicity and Human Probabilistic Reasoning

Nonmonotonic logics allow—contrary to classical (monotone) logics— for withdrawing conclusions in the light of new evidence. Nonmonotonic reasoning is often claimed to mimic human common sense reasoning. Only a few studies, though, have investigated this claim empirically. system p is a central, broadly accepted nonmonotonic reasoning system that proposes basic rationality postulates. We previo...

Probabilistic Single Function Dual Process Theory and Logic Programming as Approaches to Non-monotonicity in Human vs. Artificial Reasoning

In this paper, it is argued that single function dual process theory is a more credible psychological account of non-monotonicity in human conditional reasoning than recent attempts to apply logic programming (LP) approaches in artificial intelligence to these data. LP is introduced and among other critiques, it is argued that it is psychologically unrealistic in a similar way to hash coding in...

How many kinds of reasoning? Inference, probability, and natural language semantics

The "new paradigm" unifying deductive and inductive reasoning in a Bayesian framework (Oaksford & Chater, 2007; Over, 2009) has been claimed to be falsified by results which show sharp differences between reasoning about necessity vs. plausibility (Heit & Rotello, 2010; Rips, 2001; Rotello & Heit, 2009). We provide a probabilistic model of reasoning with modal expressions such as "necessary" an...

Probabilistic approach to rough sets

The article introduces the basic ideas and investigates the probabilistic version of rough set theory. It relies on both classification knowledge and probabilistic knowledge in analysis of rules and attributes. Rough approximation evaluative measures and one-way and two-way inter-set dependency measures are proposed and adopted to probabilistic rule evaluation. A new probabilistic dependency me...

On Császár's condition in nonmonotonic reasoning

Császár’s condition is a well-known property introduced about 50 years ago in the axiomatic theory of conditional probability. In recent years such condition has been reconsidered by some authors, who have studied its role in the coherence-based approach to conditional probability. In this paper we consider the probabilistic entailment of a conditional knowledge base by another one. We represen...
